Whether you are struggling to develop a consistent listenership, or you feel that you have hit a plateau, there are several strategies to evaluate and grow a loyal podcast following. With a few small steps, you can start to see your numbers grow pretty quickly.
Here are some ways you can grow your podcast audience:
Create Shareworthy Content
Before you take steps toward drawing more listeners to your podcast, you need to make sure that your podcast is worthy of their time. Your audience will give you anywhere from 20 minutes to as much as two hours of their time when they listen to one of your episodes. It is important that you create a great experience for your listeners and make sure that your show is relevant and adds value.
Evaluate the content of your show. You want your audience to find every episode of your podcast compelling and useful enough that they want to listen to another episode or even share it with others.
Readily Available
One of the fastest ways to miss out on potential audience growth is to have a show that is inaccessible. When your show is difficult to access, even people who are interested in your content and actively searching for your show might turn away or choose a different podcast instead.
Make sure your podcast is listed in podcast directories so that people do not have trouble finding your show. In that same manner, make sure that the title of your podcast and each episode is search engine friendly (SEO).
Publish Often
Give your followers what they want – more episodes! Publish at least once a week and maintain this cadence consistently. If you drop off publishing on your podcast, you will watch followers drop off, too.
We recommend having at least a handful of podcasts episodes in the queue to give yourself some leeway in the event that a guest cancels or you have an unforeseen absence. Schedule episodes in advance to keep the timeliness of your podcast intact.
Put Your Audience to Work
Ask your listeners to leave you a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts. Getting positive reviews on Apple Podcasts helps your show get discovered by new listeners, similarly to how reviews encourage new guests at restaurants or online retailers. The more positive reviews, the better.
Get Social
You should already be using Twitter, Facebook, and other social media networks to share your podcast. Tools like Buffer allow you to schedule content to help the episodes be shared long-term and reignite interest over time. Ask your guests to share episodes too on their own social media. Provide them copy and links to take the busy work out of it for them.
